MISSION (AP) — Border Patrol agents recently caught several Central American immigrant children after they crossed the Rio Grande.
Among them was a 6-year-old boy who was traveling alone and a 15-year-old boy who fled gang violence in Honduras.
They are part of a recent spike in the number of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico Border, with more than 10,000 total crossing in October and November.
To prevent a backlog of housing shelters near the border, authorities are sending kids north. Two camps in North Texas have opened as shelters housing 900 kids and a third facility is on the way that can hold another 200.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske visited the Rio Grande Valley this month and said the spike may be the “new normal.”
