NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The Coast Guard assisted a New Bedford-based fishing vessel that lost a rudder 100 nautical miles east of Nantucket.

The Coast Guard said the 95-foot Megan Marie sent out a distress call Sunday morning. One of the vessel’s sister ships responded, and began towing her later that afternoon. However, the tow line broke in rough seas, and the Megan Marie’s owner asked the Coast Guard to take over the tow.

According to the Coast Guard, the cutter Spencer began towing the Megan Marie early Monday morning. The Coast Guard said a commercial salvage company would take over the tow once the vessel was closer to Nantucket, and bring it to port.
